The Open Polytechnic Library So.... what's new in the Library?

We’ve all been using the world’s coolest library lately, rather than our own well-known, trusted library, but that is just the state of affairs these days, according to John Palfrey (as cited in Lozada, 2015) - “Google is America’s reference librarian.”

“For centuries, libraries have remained essentially separate, even competing with one another to establish and maintain the greatest collection,” Palfrey writes. Now, they need to “recast themselves as platforms rather than storehouses.”

And that is exactly what we are trying to achieve at the Open Polytechnic Library – We now have a “lean” collection of materials in print and we focus on helping you access our huge collection of online material. Even though Google is easy to use, verified academic sources are not readily available, that’s why the Library and Learning Support staff are committed to assisting you in becoming “information literates.”

We still gather, organise and courier printed resources to students, but we now have a new focus to reach all students through promoting our online resources.

You might have already had contact with us, we reach out to students through emails, online posts and phone calls. I feel that it’s important for us to have that one on one contact with you as it helps us to improve our services as we experience first-hand what your needs and concerns are. So by all means, if you need assistance finding academic sources or need help finding research material don’t hesitate to contact the Library and Learning Centre (library@openpolytechnic.ac.nz or call freephone 0508 650 200 and then press 3).

I know from personal experience that many of our students who are beginning their study journey after a long absence, simply want reassurance that what they are experiencing is not unusual even though it seems really scary and overwhelming. Our staff will talk you through the basics of dealing with first time online study and can talk to you about how to try and find time to fit everything in around your busy day.

Many of our first time students have not had recent contact with academic writing or using academic sources, so one of my responsibilities as a Library and Learning Support Liaison is to provide learning support for you.

I have found the most frequently asked question is definitely: “How do I reference this…?” Referencing is a really tricky issue for most of our first time students but we are able to support you and offer resources that will help you get the hang of it.

I believe our study tips and techniques provide you with the means to come to grips with academic writing and we aim to improve your chances of success by continuously improving and updating our online resources.

If you have a question or need help, please contact us, we welcome questions about our services and are happy to help you in any way we can.
